Description

RO MEMBRANE BIOCIDE is a control agent against bacteria for use on membranes and related installations. It is based on iso-thiazolins and is non-ionic and non-oxidising. RO MEMBRANE BIOCIDE is to prevent biological fouling of reverse osmosis installations.

Application

RO MEMBRANE BIOCIDE is a membrane and general-purpose micro biocide, effective at low concentrations, used to sanitize reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration systems and membranes. It can be used with cleaners to remove bio-fouling from membrane surfaces, filter media, and pipe-work. RO MEMBRANE BIOCIDE  may also be used as a storage preservative for certain types of membrane.

Use and Dosing

RO MEMBRANE BIOCIDE may be applied in one of two ways. It may be intermittently fed to the feedwater of a membrane separation system, or RO MEMBRANE BIOCIDE may be used to clean & prevent biological fouling of reverse osmosis installations from being temporarily out of service. For the last procedure:

  1. Fill the cleaning tank with permeate.
  2. Per 100 ltr add 5 ltr of RO MEMBRANE BIOCIDE and stir thoroughly.
  3. Circulate through the system as per instructions from the supplier of your installation.
  4. Prevent installation from freezing,
  5. Before recommissioning the drain system and discharging product water during the first 30 minutes of operation.

Preservation of reverse osmosis membranes with non oxidizing biocides – comparison with SMBS

  Sodium metabisulphite ( SMBS ) is the current standard preservation chemical used in RO plants during the shutdown. It is a cheap and efficient preservative, but its tendency to oxidize easily has several drawbacks. The use of a non-oxidizing biocide instead could solve some of the issues currently seen with the SMBS , but little has been reported about membrane compatibility and preservation efficiency in the long-term mode.
